Magne asked Ian Rankin:

Some authors of crime fiction claims not to read contemporary crime fiction, to avoid being inspired by a story, a plot or a character, to keep a clear head and not to be disturbed by contemporary.. "rivals". Do you read contemporary crime fiction? If you do, do you have any favourites? And thank you for some great reads, not to mention several good tips for Edinburgh pubs through the years:)

Ian Rankin Like most crime writers I also read Crime. Recent favourites include Adrian McKinty, Mick Herron and Oliver Harris. Last book I read was The Dry, a murder mystery set in the outback. It was excellent.
