Goodreads asked Lara Lillibridge:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Lara Lillibridge I knew back in childhood that I would someday write this book, and I started and stopped several times, never getting more than 20 pages before I lost interest. When I turned 40, I enrolled in an MFA program with the goal of writing about my childhood, then spent two years writing about everything else I could think of. Finally, in my thesis interview, one of my advisors asked me when I would, "stop writing all this boring stuff," and return to my childhood memoir, so I did. I think I needed the time and distance to find my way in.
