Goodreads asked Phil Slattery:

How do you get inspired to write?

Phil Slattery I don't wait for inspiration to write. I am inspired by ideas that pop into my mind. At those times, I try to jot down the idea as soon as I can, whether it is on a napkin, the back of a receipt, or any scrap of paper (that's why I always carry a pen with me). When I arrive home, I type out the idea in my basic short story format. When I write, I try to tell the story as best I can and let it determine its own length. If it turns into a novel, so be it. The play I mentioned earlier, started out as a short story, but I eventually realized that a play told the story best.
