Get the plot settled in your head before you start writing, but be willing to toss it out the window as the characters develop personalities that take them in directions different from what you intended. Sometimes your instincts have to lead you. Whenever I get writer's block, it's because there is a degree of inconsistency between where I thought I was going and how the story is unfolding.
