Goodreads asked B.E. Jones:

What books are on your summer reading list this year?

B.E. Jones A summer holiday just wouldn’t be complete without at least one Agatha Christie novel. There’s just something about lying by the pool, or, more likely, or in my messy garden drifting back in time with the grand dame of crime. Anyone who thinks she writes only ‘cosy’, easy-going crime should give her a try. There’s some dark stuff going on in there!

As I devour lots of crime novels throughout the year I tend to favour something different on holiday and I’m a sucker for a beautifully crafted period piece. This year I’ve got my eye on Lincoln in The Bardo by George Saunders, alongside Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad. I’ll also take a copy of Mrs Hemingway by Naomi Wood if I get to pack a suitcase for somewhere warm – I love that whole era and the jaded ‘romanticism’ of the Riviera/F Scott Fitzgerald set. At heart I’d love to have been a bit of a ‘flapper’, lazing on a terrace, watching the sun set over the twinkling Med, cocktail in hand…

I’ll probably break my rule about reading crime to squeeze in a quick peep at Erin Kelly’s He Said, She Said – well, you can’t go completely cold turkey!
