For me, the key is organization. For non-fiction, I need to be clear about what I am trying to say. Then I create an outline that becomes the chapter titles. For fiction, I need to be clear about the structure of the story in terms of the main character's drive and three acts. Then I just dive into it and see where it takes me. It is a wonderful journey.
