I sometimes put an idea or a whole story away for a while, and let it gather its thoughts in the back of my mind. If something's not working, or doesn't want to progress, I always think that there's a writerly-creativity reason. The best cure is to go on to another project, or read a book or write a review. You can come back to the blocked project later, or just let it simmer.
