Goodreads asked George Morrison:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

George Morrison I apologize "up front" for what is going to sound cute, but this is the truth. In the first chapter of Novel Problems, Jake gets his inspriation at midnight while working on a corporate system. That's what happened for me. During a stint as an Oracle databse programmer, I would frequently work nights. It was during one of those sessions when, taking a break from pounding SQL code, I browsed through some family vacation photos. During one of our frequent trips up North, we had passed through Marinette and I had taken some pictures of a destroyer that was in the shipyard. I looked the ship up online and was intrigued by its technical specification. And like Jake, the idea hit me right then. I jotted it down, but didn't get back to it for several years. When I did, it took me a lot longer to write than it took Jake to produce his manuscript. But I'm pretty sure the same amount of coffee was consumed!! ;)
