I had this image of a small boy, a street urchin, performing magic tricks on the streets of a Halifax of the past. That started it. Why was he there? Why was he on his own, trying to survive as a kid? Where did he learn magic tricks? Where did he sleep at night? Many years later, I started making up bedtime stories for my kids. These stories featured a boy and a girl on adventures, kids much like my own. So I created two protagonists for this novel from that experience. The rest came as I wrote.
