Hi Tim, I lived in Cape Town for 10 years. I really enjoyed my time there. Do you live in Cape Town because you fell in love with Africa from your travels and writing? Would you ever go back to the UK. Would you recommend your children live there or would you want them to go back to the UK due to all the political unrest?
Tim Butcher
I live in Cape Town because it so often feels the finest place on the planet. The people I meet here are so above-average interesting, the physical setting is so uplifting and the human spirit exhibited by so many is full of the adventure and mischief that has been wrung out of my homeland.
These feelings are not permanent, of course. The political unrest you mention is a concern so while I currently don't have plans to move anywhere else, back to my British place of birth for example, I would be reluctant to say `never'.
And yes the virtue of Cape Town in my eye is in part from its location in Africa while at the same time it is close to unique, therefore unlike the rest of Africa.
Thanks for the question, Dale.

Read both books ages ago, but thought they were worth a puff. I think we may have some links: I was assistant sports editor at the Telegraph from 1990-2013, worked at the Mail, People and Mirror (in its heyday), but I am a Zimbo having grown up in Rhodesia. Dad ended up as Mugabe's first chief justice (used to be a good thing) and uncle was rector at Peterhouse. Am having an outing to Kaap outing in November?
