Goodreads asked Patrice Johnson:

How do you get inspired to write?

Patrice Johnson Tyler was missing for six years, and there was nothing my family or I could do to help him. When my husband, daughter and I traveled to Corsica, France, to claim the Tyler's remains and personal effects, we found his journals in a box in a remote mountain cabin. As I studied his journals and organized them chronologically, I realized that at last I could do something to help Tyler, and he would want to help others. With the expert guidance and encouragement of best-selling authors Bonnie Hearn Hill and Mark Spencer, I fell into the routine of rising every morning at 4:30 a.m. and writing for six to eight hours. Over the course of seven years, as Bonnie and Mark taught me the craft of thriller and narrative nonfiction writing, this book was born. Simply put: I couldn't not write it.
