Hi I came here via Haymarket books on Twitter.... I put your book on my to-read list hopefully my library will pick it up. It looks like a varied collection I'm just curious who your main influences are I know that's a trite question, but, I'm an aspiring writer myself, so,?

Not a trite question. Some of my main influences (in terms of not only style, but what it means to live as a writer in the world) are: Gwendolyn Brooks, Studs Terkel, Patricia Smith, Kiese Laymon, Ross Gay, and Audre Lorde. Also some writers of my own peer cohort: Nate Marshall, Hanif Abdurraqib, Angel Nafis, Fatimah Asghar, Safia Elhillo. Some of my visual arts influences are Carrie Mae Weems, Glenn Ligon, Kerry James Marshall, Kara Walker, and Dan Flavin.

Eve, I just finished Ghosts in the Schoolyard and am really blown away. I was especially intrigued to see the connection you make between institutional mourning and the Afro-pessimist concept of 'social death'. Do you consider your work to be part of an Afro-pessimist lineage? I've been really compelled by what I've read in this tradition so far, and am eager for more to read in this vein!
