I noticed several parallels between Hallana and Penric -- Bastard's order, physicians, sorcerers, and picked up an unintentional demon (at least by human standards). I wondered if this was coincidence? Or did Hallana have some interesting themes you wanted to dig into deeper? (Hallana is one of my favorite characters, btw.) ^^ -Kalli

I mainly wanted to have some fun playing with a really powerful sorcerer character. Once I decided to set him in the Chalion universe, a lot of the parameters and limits came factory-default. Then the game became to see what all I, and he, could do to explore them. We'd seen sorcerers before in the 5GU, but never from their own points of view.
Of course, once characters are set up and initially launched, they have a way of riding off down their own roads, the more so as they have time and space to develop. This takes us both to unexpected places, which is rather the point of such a journey.
The ala carte novella structure of Penric's tales is meant to give me the maximum choice of routes.

As a fan of your Vorkosigan universe and also as a big geeky nerd who loves sci-fi RPGs, do you use Traveller or other games as inspiration for your universe? Incidentally, the GURPS sourcebook was my gateway (pun intended) into your wonderful series several years ago. Love that book as well and am forever grateful for coming across it.

Wondering about employment of the Koudelka girls. Obviously not necessary for the story to tell us, but I don't recall any info about jobs for Delia or Olivia. I feel like paying jobs for females would have been discouraged by class issues in old Barrayar, but progressive leanings would have encouraged employment. Would you satisfy my curiousity?

Dear Lois, A few times, Penric twists up a message before handing it off to be delivered; I assume as a security measure. Perhaps you would be intrigued to know* about "letter locking" which is an old this-world solution for same. There are several YouTube videos and a good website about it by Jana Dambrogio. *assuming you don't already know?
