I'm not sure what you mean by "correctly". I guess I just look at the character and what their issues might be? It comes pretty naturally, so other than my usual pre-writing rituals of making playlists, outlines, and Pinterest boards, I don't really do anything else. I discover who they are as I write and smooth over A LOT during edits. The characters can definitely go their own way as I write, so I always have to go back and rewrite some things I wrote in the beginning.
