Dear L. Lowry, I absolutely adore all of your books that I've read. I've noticed that you've written books from all time periods, with the early-mid 1900's with "Number the Stars" and "The Silent Boy," and the implied future of "The Giver." I was wondering why do you jump around with time settings, and what era is your favorite to write or imagine? Sincerely, Colton H

I first read The Giver as a fifth grader (sometime around 2001) and I have always pictured the community as a sort of fifties suburb, so I was kind of surprised when the movie was filled with futuristic technology (although given they had the technology to erase memory and emotion, it makes sense). Did you always see the community as technologically advanced, or was that an evolution of your original vision?
