Michele Rios Petrelli asked Janet Fitch:

Hey Janet, I wanted to get your thoughts on writing groups. Do you feel these hinder or help a writer with their novel? I'm in a writing group now and though I think most of the writers are offering valid feedback sometimes I feel there are a couple not being genuinely sincere with their input. I just wanted to see if this is something I should keep investing my time in while working on my novel. Tks Shelly :)

Janet Fitch Hi Shelly!
I have a writers group, still! But there are only four of us, and one skypes in from an island in the pacific northwest. I think its hugely important who you allow to critique your work. You have to respect them, respect their work, respect their judgement. No one who doesn't make all three of those criteria should be allowed to comment on your work. I'm pretty savage on this one, even if I liked certain people as people, I would not stay in a group with them. I would form my own group, even if it's just one other writer. Or maybe even one or two people from the group you're leaving might feel the same way. Good luck in your writing! best, Janet
