Goodreads asked Vann Turner:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Vann Turner I assert that my novels don’t arise in me, but are whispered to me under the silence. The characters, actions, emotions involved, conflicts, goals and settings are all presented to me, not in one flash, but are revealed bit by bit and scene by scene. My part in the process is to hammer words to convey what has been revealed. From this the writing flows easily.

When the words don’t flow easily (writer’s block) I’ve come to realize that I am trying to interject things that haven’t arisen by revelation. In other words, I—Vann—am trying to interject things the Muses haven’t sanctioned.

The solution begins in realizing that I AM struggling. So I lay it aside, work in the wood pile, or vacuum or walk the dogs. I call it a mini-holiday. I don’t think about the story, I’ve laid it aside. The next morning, I start fresh and the words flow from what the Muses whispered into me under my own thinking.
