Hi Elizabeth, my daughter is interested in carrying out the experiment on whitening toothpastes and she is wondering which stone tiles work for the experiment. Her science teacher is saying that they would not work so I am contacting you directly. Which stone tiles are the best for the experiment? Kind regards, Vicki Jones

Thanks for the question Vicki! This experiment was in my first book, First Place Science Fair Projects for Inquisitive Kids. In the project I recommend using the unfinished backside of ceramic tiles. The porous back of the tile will stain easily with coffee so that you have a good surface to test the whitening property of the toothpaste. You could also try using egg shells instead of tiles - or do both, along with the front of the ceramic tile and stone tiles. Compare the results to see which is the best substitute for real teeth in this experiment!!
