How do you chose the names of your characters?

Lois Lowry The names come to me intuitively. It is very rare that I change the name that first appears in my imagination. One example, though, is the character named Claire in the book SON. She first came to me with the name Mary. But I realized that some readers would find religious significance in that name, which I had not intended.
