Lois Lowry Easier to write about Kira because she was more like me. I like to vary the gender of protaganists

I've read your book, The Giver a few months ago, and I still couldn't understand how you come up with such a world like Jonas's. Were you inspired by any books, movies or personal experiences? To be honest, I love writing. I would love to know how you start a simple story just for pleasure. I really want to try it out when I have time. =)
