Goodreads asked Arthur D. Hittner:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Arthur D. Hittner The book ARTIST, SOLDIER, LOVER, MUSE was inspired by a 1936 painting by the artist Harold J. Rabinovitz (1915-1944). Research on the artist gave rise to "At the Threshold of Brilliance: The Brief but Splendid Career of Harold J. Rabinovitz" (and a magazine article about the same subject for Fine Art Connoisseur). What I learned about the artist was intriguing, and I thought it would be fun to pick up where my research left off, by writing a fictional account of the life of an emerging young artist in the exciting and challenging New York art world of the late 1930s.
