Richard Ferguson
Richard Ferguson asked David Kudler:

Do you speak and read Japanese?

David Kudler I do not, alas.

I have had to research every word and phrase and have it checked by a copyeditor. One of the things I learned an editor is always to look it up--even when you are sure you know it's correct.

Japanese is a wonderful language, very different from those I've learned in the past. I find, of course, that I have picked up a lot over the years, and hope some day soon actually to spend the time to become at least somewhat conversant.

The thing that I know will always keep me from literacy, beyond the subtleties of the language, is naturally the use of kanji. I've been trying (not very systematically) to teach myself the Chinese ideograms, but beyond the most basic and common, I have had a hard time committing them to memory.

In any case, if anyone finds any errors in the Japanese in my books (or in the English, for that matter), I would be very grateful if you'd reach out and let me know!
