A Goodreads user asked Alexander C. Kane:

What was your inspiration for Andrea Vernon and the Corporation for UltraHuman Protection?

Alexander C. Kane My company has a big sales meeting every year, and it ends in an awards dinner. Everyone has a good time and we celebrate all the hard work everyone does, but one year I sat there thinking, "Okay, but it's not like we're saving the world.
And then I thought for a while about Andrea, a character who is extraordinary, but has been a little beaten down by the reality of life and made to feel ordinary. I thought about the idea and the characters for a while and I finally realized that I better start writing it soon, because my wife was five months pregnant. I didn't know who the villain would be, but I knew the scariest thing in my life was becoming a dad, so I made the looming terror a fertilized egg.
And so, I started writing.
