I absolutely LOVE The Giver Quartet. My book club (made up of teachers) read the entire series this summer. The Giver is required reading for our 8th graders - but Messenger and Son moved me beyond belief. My friend and I wondered if Messenger has a connection to Christianity? We felt the character "Matty" might be loosely based on the life of Jesus. Any truth to that?

Lois Lowry What is "truth"?? It is certainly true that many people see it that way...so it is true for them. But I don't like to limit interpretations to Christian ones. Many no-Christians get a great deal from the books. THE GIVER is a frequent Bar Mitzvah gift.

I find the concept of the The Giver and the idea that the society depends on one person to bear the pain and memories of the entire community a very interesting concept generally. I also loved the ending because it was so beautifully written and you left it to the readers to decide what happened. What was your inspiration for that part of the story, and also the ending?
