Sometimes I get insights and new scenes as I awaken around 4-5am. I keep a notebook by the bed (if I can just make myself turn over and write it down. If I don't they are gone forever). These are the freebies. The rest come from observations, life experiences and off-the-wall imagination, or listening to some great lyrics.
