Goodreads asked David Allan Hamilton:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

David Allan Hamilton My most recent novel, The Crying of Ross 128, arose from my novel writing course I ran in the fall of 2017. It began as one of a dozen story ideas I was kicking around. This idea came from an incident in May, 2017, when strange signals from the Ross 128 dwarf star system were detected at the large antenna array in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. At first, the astronomers weren't sure what these signals were (they were later shown to be of Earth origin). From that story, I wondered what would happen if, in the near future, an amateur astronomer picked up signals from space that were clearly alien? What kind of impact would that have on us all? And that's how Ross 128 began.
