I was wondering where you draw your inspirations from? Do you often see people, historical time periods, moments and then create stories based upon that? How much of your writing are pieces of your childhood combined with life experiences?
Lois McMaster Bujold
This question is a bit too broad to answer, but briefly, All Of The Above covers it. Like found art, the stories tend to be pieced together like a montage from all sorts of magpie bits and bobs, fleshed out as I go. Including, of course, experiences from all periods of my life. (Pieces of my childhood are (among) my life experiences, natch. They aren't really something separate.)
Which bits in my bag get picked out for inclusion at any given time is driven by the underlying needs of the story. So the process is far from random.
(My nonfiction collection Sidelines: Talks and Essays includes more on some of the stories' specific origins, scattered about.)

I just reread "Diplomatic Immunity" for the umpteenth time and wondered if you ever had any plans to write a story about what the Cetagandan Star Crèche might have ended up doing with Miles' blood sample/genome? The first time I read it back in 2002 I hoped they would somehow be able to use it to make his body much better.

I've recently read the Penric series and liked them a lot. Recommended them to my mom, who's also a fan, but reads only in Russian. That's how we discovered that there's no Russian translation for these books. Is the translation (and subsequent Russian edition) happening, or going to happen in the nearest future? And, if there are no plans for Russian yet, may I try to translate the first novella myself?
