Gigi Anderson
Gigi Anderson asked Gail Carriger:

Hello, I would like to say first that I love your books! ALL of them! My question is about your conflicts. They always seem so outlandish yet they always fit perfectly into the plot and the world you build. Do you build the world around them or do you fit them into the world?

Gail Carriger Oh my goodness, what a challenging question. It's a bit of both, a lot of times my conflicts come from the world, or at least humans attempting to harness, abuse, or understand it.

For example in Competence, I wanted a surprise dirigible attack but I also wanted to introduce a new element in the way the aerosphere works in the Parsolverse, together the bubble idea developed and from that the ridiculously shaped airship. It all kind of twists and turns together.

I think it comes from my archeology background, humans, environment, and object creation are all inextricably linked.
