Since I'm an aspiring writer myself, I would say just try your hand at writing. Then find 5 or more honest friends to tell you what they think. Honesty is the key and don't feel down if it's not well received. I gave my manuscript to 6 friends and gave them a red pen to write all over it. I took no offense to what they said and more importantly I listened to what they said.
