I actually wrote (and illustrated) the original story back in seventh grade. When I returned to it 20-some years later, I thought I'd edit it and turn it into a children's picture book. I quickly gave up this idea as I realized my writing has improved--but my ability to illustrate has not. Luckily, the story took on a life of its own and soon became a middle-grade chapter book.
