ABANDONED is the fifth book in the Maxine Revere series. Each books is a complete, stand-alone mystery. Over the series, Max evolves as a character and there are recurring characters (such as her bodyguard/assistant David Kane). ABANDONED refers to some events in the past books without giving away the mystery of the book; most reviewers have indicated that all of the Max books can be read as a stand alone. This particular story is where Max searches for what happened to her mother years ago — her mother abandoning her when she was 9 has been a cloud over her life. I hope that helps!
