The lady in Red
The lady in Red asked Laura Thalassa:

What is your definition of a cliffhanger?

Laura Thalassa Oh man. Tough question. For me, it's when a book is deliberately left in a state of disarray--maybe it's unknown whether a main character is alive or dead, or just when you thought that the story was all tied up with a nice ribbon, something happens that throws the story/characters into deeper waters. I think if the last chapter leaves you worrying about the story or characters, I'd probably consider that a cliffhanger. What I don't consider a cliffhanger is when (in a series), a book leaves off with some unanswered questions, or the overarching plotline is unfinished, because that just is standard fair for a series. :)
