Thomas Matthew asked Mark Reece:

Sounds like an interesting plot .... How did you come up with the idea for your book??

Mark Reece Hi Tom, thanks for the question. As as is the case with many stories, the idea came from a number of different sources, over a period of time. When watching the news, it struck me that the idea that increasing economic growth is always a good thing, however achieved, is considered a truism. I wondered whether this is necessarily so, as it seemed to me that increasing economic growth often involves makes life more difficult for some people.

I've been interested in the 'sleep' aspect for awhile, as sleep is vital for health and, as described in the book, sleep patterns have been significantly altered since the invention of electricity, and artificial light, and more recent forms of technology have continued to influence how, and how long, people sleep.

I'm also interested in developments about the administration of justice, such as the way that some criminal trials have recently been held partially, or in a few cases, wholly, in secret. These ideas came together over a period of time to form the skeleton of the plot.

Best wishes,

Mark
