First and foremost, read as much -- and as widely -- as you can. Expose yourself to all different sorts of writing and writers -- fiction, nonfiction, essays, poetry, etc. Learn as much as you can from the writing of others. Treat writing like a full-time job, even if you already have a full-time job. Carve out a schedule to write, even if it's only for a few minutes a day. Writing is hard work, and self-discipline is absolutely essential.
