Michael J. Sullivan:
Hi Mike! I have a question about Revelations, as compared to Chronicles. Reading the Riyria Revelations, I found myself liking Arista a lot more than Alric. However, when I read the Riyria Chronicles, I felt the opposite. Was it your intention to create this difference in the characters likability between the two series?
Michael J. Sullivan
Yes.
Alric is too young to be a jerk in Chronicles, and I wanted to illustrate his carefree life as a kid. Arista is in transition into becoming "the princess." Her storyline is already shifting to being a bit spoiled. Her character then suffers her first real tragedy in Rose, and she begins the long road to becoming the character she is in Revelations. And of course she isn't necessarily a protagonist in The Crown Conspiracy. She might be good or evil in that book.

Michael J. Sullivan:
Hello, Michael! I recently devoured your Riyria series and enjoyed it immensely. I've also been impressed with how active you seem to be with your fans and the community here at Goodreads, which drove me to ask this question. I'm an aspiring amateur writer myself, but I've been having trouble getting feedback on my work. Do you have any advice on methods or avenues through which to ask for comments or reviews?

Never heard of you, Michael. But I don't suppose you've heard of me, either. That's the trouble, hardly anybody has. I don't write novels and have no wish to do so. As far as I'm concerned novels, generally, are just fairy tales for adults. What was it they always told us? Write what you know, wasn't it? That's what I do. I know about my own life; what I've done, where I've been and what I've seen. And believe me...?

Now that I've listened to "Professional Integrity", I'm even more convinced that you could be a great author of detective fiction, if you ever decided to try it. I had already noticed in the Riyria books some elements and devices, and some writing skills, that are typical of that genre. And Royce could be a great detective, besides being a great criminal... So, have you ever thought of writing detective fiction?
