I walk away for awhile. Sometimes that's all it takes. I'll be out on my bike, in the woods with my dogs, in the shower---then BOOM! Some idea hits like a bolt from above and I know exactly what to do. I'll also add that sometimes it takes more than one person to brainstorm a book. I attribute some really excellent ideas to other writer friends and my editor.
