Goodreads asked Jenn Lees:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Jenn Lees My most recent book is the first one of a trilogy not yet published. It’s a portal fantasy set in Scotland and another world very much like Scotland in its past. I love history and I love fantasy and I find the two go together very well.
I got the idea of a warrior riding through from another less technological world into our modern world from…well, probably the many fantasy and time slip novels I’ve read. But the particular setting for the portal in the first novel of this trilogy is somewhat personal.
I used to live in Perth Scotland, and we had a friend who lived in Abernethy. It’s a quaint Scottish village with a very Pictish past, and on top of a hill behind the wee village is the remains of Iron Age fortifications from when the land was ruled by the Picts.
Yes, the paint-your-naked-body-blue-with-woad-and-go-screaming-into-battle Picts.
Well, that just got my imaginative juices going.
And the view from the hill once you get up there, after you’ve recovered your breathing and heart rate to normal, is fantastic.
So, my hero is a Celtic/Pictish type warrior from another world and my heroine lives in a tiny cottage at the bottom of this hill.
The trilogy will probably be titled Arlan’s Pledge, and Book 1, The Crossing.
