(view spoiler)[I recently read We are the Ants (and loved it!) but I was wondering if in any earlier drafts Henry did or didn't press the button, so it wasn't as much as an open ending? Also, I read in the acknowledgements there were many different versions of this story until you decided on the end-of-the-world alien-thing, and how did you find that this version of the story was the one you really wanted to tell? The answer was always open like that. In my heart, I knew that wanting to press it was the more important thing than whether or not he actually did it.
As for the second part, I honestly just kept rewriting it until I got to the version that stuck. But when I started the draft that ultimately became this book, I knew pretty early on that I'd finally found the right version of the story.

would you ever write a sequel or short story to "we are the ants" to answer some remaining questions like: why DID jesse kill himself or why the aliens chose henry, kept abducting him over the years and why they didn't give him the chance to press the button in the end?

I just finished At the Edge of the Universe, and I love it, and I just have to ask: do Ozzie and Henry live in the same (possibly shrinking, possibly ending) universe? I ask because of the Diego that Ozzie saw with the "skinny kid with wavy hair" (Henry, perhaps?) If so, does that mean Henry lives in a world where "some YA book about ants and aliens [Ozzie's] never heard of" exists but is not about him?

I'm an aspiring writer, but I'm dealing with two things: I get discouraged every single day because 96% of manuscripts are rejected, and I haven't had an idea for years, literally. There's too many people wanting to be writers, and knowing there's so much competition just kills me a little every day. When I get motivated, immediatly something appears about the industry that kills it. Any tips on how to deal with this?
