Martha Hall Kelly
You can start with either one--I have been hearing from readers that some loved starting with Lost Roses so they can read the story in order of how it happened, others start with Lilac Girls so they can read them in the order I wrote them, but the choice is yours. I might have a slight preference for reading Lilac Girls first, so you know the characters going into Lost Roses.

Ms. Kelly, just finished your amazing book (our book club will discuss it this Friday - can't wait!) and I can't stop thinking about it! I was especially intrigued by Herta Oberheuser and some of the clues that seemed to shine a little light on why she did what she did. There are a few references to her cutting herself. I was under the (mistaken?) impression that this type of self-harm was a fairly modern disorder?

I found myself hoping that Kasia would escape post WWII Poland before she was unable to leave and locked behind the Iron Curtain. I spent several weeks last summer in Leipzig, Germany at a German teachers' seminar and learned a lot about what life with the East German Stasi had been. The parallels to concentration camps controls made me want Kasia to get out and not suffer twice. How did you feel about this?

I just finished reading Lilac Girls and have to say it was an amazing and powerful book. I am especially appreciative of your "Author's Notes". Thank you for sharing so much about what went into writing this book, the true stories and your inspirations for characters...it causes one to appreciate the story even more. Well done!! I am elated that you are writing a prequel to Lilac Girls. When can we expect to it?
