While I've yet to read the Ex-Pats, The Travelers just blew me away with the intricate plot, twists and turns and layered characters. From the review I've read of The Paris Diversion, certainly more intrigue and pulse-racing scenes are expected. May I ask how you maintain that pent-up pacing when writing these edge of your seat novels?
Chris Pavone
Thank you Cathy! My approach to pacing is to create peaks and valleys: moments of relative quiet (of internal monologue, of back story, of atmospheric description, etc.) that interrupt the primary action and tensions, making readers impatient to find out what happens, creating a general aura of expectation and anxiety, while constantly withholding full resolution. I think this requires that readers care about the characters, so early in the book I try to devote some space--efficiently, I hope--to defining these people, making them credible, worthy of our emotions.

Mine is a question about writing technique. Do you make a complete outline of your story before you start and stick to it, or do you let the characters meander through their story lines to the finale? I admire your writing style and so far my favorite of your books is "The Accident." Thanks!

Hi Chris, I enjoyed reading the Expats. This Lee Child recommendation was a good one! Question on the end of Expats...as undercover agents, why didn't Julia and Bill suspect that Kathy, as a former CIA agent, might be recording their final conversation? It seemed a big risk to me, as I was reading, for them to spill the beans on their caper.

I'm about two-thirds through The Paris Diversion and am struck by the hyper reality (does that need a hyphen?) of the characters, their relationships and frustrations, and locations. Your style gives me a soles-on-pavement experience, and I love it. Have you lived in/spent time in all of those cities?
