Goodreads asked M.F. Grabham:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

M.F. Grabham The source of inspiration for my story comes from my mother’s cousin, Muriel Oxford. Muriel became well known in the British press after she was crowned Miss Great Britain in 1935 but, two years later, my grandfather almost choked on his pipe when, from outside in the street, a newspaper seller repeatedly shouted out the breaking news that his niece had been sensationally accused of murder.

While returning from the United States on the liner SS Paris, just a few hours before the ship was due to tie up at the port of Plymouth, a famous actor called Frank Vosper plunged to his death from the veranda of Muriel’s stateroom cabin. Although the media was bursting with speculation and sexual innuendo surrounding what may have transpired in her cabin before Frank’s freefall into the great hereafter, an inquest jury returned an ‘open verdict’.
