Write, write and write some more. Don't think you have to have the whole story figured out before you start. I also advise starting with short stories, that will give you practice in starting (and finishing!) a whole story arc. Find a knowledgeable community that can give you feedback. And submit your stories to publications. It's terrifying, but a necessary step!
