I brainstorm about things that would be funny, actions that would create empathy for my main character, conflict between characters. I am a methodical outliner. My outlines are often 15%-20% of the finished novel in terms of word count. All key plot points are laid out in detail. Every chapter is planned with a beginning, middle, and end. And then I inject lots of immature humor.

Hi C.T., I am a middle school library media specialist and recently purchased your series. I have not had a chance to read the books yet so the question I have for you is, do you have to read the books in order for them to make sense? I have a lot of students picking up books in the middle of the series because 1-3 are checked out at the moment.
