In my opinion, there are so many wonderful things tied to being a writer. I would imagine that you could ask 50 writers what's the best thing about being a writer and you would probably receive many different responses.
Writing has always served as a form of therapy that allowed me to be at peace with the world. I have an inherent need to be creative, and writing has allowed me to be able to satisfy this need throughout my life. Writing relaxes me and gives me a lot of personal enjoyment. When I go a day or so without writing, which is a rarity, I become anxious, moody and depressed. So for me, the greatest thing about being a writer is the tremendous sense of peace it brings to my life.
