Goodreads asked Harry Carpenter:

How do you get inspired to write?

Harry Carpenter I just do. I really don't know. I feel like I wish I could wake up and say "Ok, today I'm writing the chapter "The one about the Monkey." I wish it worked that way. I'll have a creative moment, and I have to sieze it. I actually started writing the first chapter of a sequel of a book that wasn't even published yet. I take the moments as I get them.
Sometimes it's a mood. Sometimes it's the weather. I'll have days where I burn through a chapter or two of story, and others I push along a paragraph at a time, slowly putting the story together.
I think it also has to do with "where" I am with the story. If I'm at a part that I'm excited to talk about, I'll likely blow through that with excitement and joy.
