The Detective Moran character is so 'real', is he based on a person in your life?

Thank you! No, I don't base characters on real people. It's too limiting: if I did that, I'd be stuck with what the real person would actually say and do and feel, and that might not match the needs of the book.
I do occasionally steal a line I've overheard in passing, though. My husband once told me about hearing one kid call another 'yeh bleedin' golf ball', and that was way too brilliant to waste. I stole it for Faithful Place.

A comment, rather than a question; One of the most powerful devices in your books is auditory description. I have never read an author whose descriptions of the sounds of places are so powerful and haunting. I work hard on visual descriptions when I write, but rarely consider how things sound. I adore your writing. Keep going!

I have read all of your books and just finished The Secret Place. I loved it; as an educator pf adolescents and young adults, I compliment you on how well you captured their lives and minds. Please refresh my memory on Holly and Stephen; how did they encounter each other in a previous novel?
