Anthony asked Karen Strong:

Greetings Karen, I just finished your book, Just South of Home, and enjoyed it. I have a book in my collection entitled Folk Beliefs Of The Southern Negro by Newbell Niles Puckett, Ph.D. published in 1926. I was wondering if you might have used this as one of the sources of your research for your story? I ask this because of your use of the word haint, and various other themes throughout the novel.

Karen Strong Hi Anthony, glad you enjoyed the book. I was born and raised in the rural South so I heard many stories from the elders about haints. Just South of Home is inspired by country girlhood and my family has deep roots in their community so we probably share a lot of the same folk beliefs and traditions that Dr. Puckett explores in his book.
