A Goodreads user asked Lisa See:

We once saw you and your Mom present at the L A Book Festival at UCLA. It was delightful and is a wonderful memory! You were so darling together. Are you working on a new novel? I love reading your books, and I've read many of them. Thanks for being a writer.

Lisa See I remember that event! What I remember the most about it was that the moderator said she'd rather be at a party with my mom than with me. My mom surely was a party girl, no question about that.

I’m writing a novel based on my great-grandmother’s diary. She grew up on a homestead in South Dakota. Her family then continued west to homestead in Washington State. She got pregnant very young and had to get married. She and her husband (my great-grandfather) became itinerant workers, working from Alaska down to the Mexican border. It may sound different thematically and geographically from my other books, but I think it fits right in. I’m once again telling a moment of history through the eyes of women.
