I wanted to allow readers to explore the hidden world of New York City and the New York City Fire Department. At the same time I wanted to relate how it felt to do this kind of work, to describe the excitement and fear along with the emotional and physical challenges. I think that both firefighters and readers who are not involved with the emergency services will identify with my personal journey as I grew and changed over 33 years with the FDNY.
