How in the heck do you come up with the ideas for your books? In other words, how do you stay up on what's happening in the world to know enough to write a book?

Read “Pines” a while ago and I really enjoyed it! So captivating and creative! I have started writing several stories but I always struggle with the creation of and the development of the characters. Any advice? I feel like I am supposed to give as much details as I can of a character, especially the main one, at the beginning of the story, so as the reader gets an impression/ concrete idea of how she/he is.
